Accesss by train

[City map excerpt with position of two train stations and the MPI]

Jena can be easily accessed by train via the main ICE-routes from Frankfurt/Main to Berlin or from Munich to Berlin (respectively vice versa). If you arrive from the direction of Frankfurt/Main, you will usually have to change trains at Weimar and arrive at the station "Jena-West". If you arrive from the direction of Dresden, you have the option to travel via Leipzig. Both from the direction of Berlin and Munich, get off the train at the station "Jena-Paradies".

Station "Jena-West" (2):
Cross the square in front of the station and walk straight ahead down Hohe Straße. At its end walk down the stairs and take Hainstraße to the right until you reach Felsenkellerstraße. Follow Felsenkellerstraße uphill. The Max Planck Institute is located right at the end of Felsenkellerstraße. (walking time some 10 minutes)

ICE-Station "Jena-Paradies" (3):
"Jena-Paradies" is a newly built station located along Knebelstraße. After leaving the station turn left and walk about 100 m to the tram stop "Am Paradiesbahnhof". Take line 2 with direction "Winzerla" or line 3 with direction "Lobeda-Ost" and get off already the next stop called "Felsenkeller". Cross the street at the traffic lights, turn left and follow Kahlaische Straße for about 200 m. Take the next intersection Sandweg on your right hand to the Max Planck Institute.
If you intend to walk (walking time 10 minutes) leave the station, cross the street and turn left. Follow the street straight ahead, pass by a roundabout (after that: Kahlaische Straße). After the traffic light (Felsenkellerstraße) pass on to the next intersection (Sandweg) and take the steep driveway on your right hand side to the Max Planck Institute.

Please note: If you take a taxi cab from the station, make sure to tell the driver to take you to the Max Planck Institute in the Kahlaische Straße 10. (There are several Max Planck Institutes in Jena.)
